I'm so not able to function in the morning. I do get up and do what I have to do but it is always a blur. I know mornings are lovely but my biochemistry just won't let me realize this.

My principal cornered me at the copy machine that laughs as I walk in each morning. This machine prepares to change functions, jam paper and zoom in and/or out for fun while I am trying to figure out how many of which pages I want to copy.

With a serious look (I decide that a parent must have complained about something I have or have not done). I compliment her on her hair, it does look nice and ask about her new grand-daughter that I have been very jealous of. Not the kid but the fact that she has a grandbaby and I do not as of yet. She smiles and tells me how wonderful it is to experience this bebe. sigh.

Then she asks with that look if I would be willing in the next few weeks to take a few days off with a sub in place in order to take pictures for the school yearbook. I gulp, drop my papers and the copy machine laughs louder as it realizes it can mess up even more without effort on my account.

She will pay all "costs" for film or whatever. Would I consider this?

Last year when the local newspaper head photographer came into my classroom to take candids, I was caught drooling over his Canon Mark1D something or other as he took shots of me and my kids.

The year before that I was feeling obvious as I tripped over the cables and light boxes and umbrellas that the Lifetouch pro guy had set up. He was thinking about lunch and whether or not his wife would want him to do something when the day and pictures of grumpy children were done.

I told her I would be thrilled. I am too easy. I should have held out for a paid lunch and amenities, right?

Now I'm thinking it's a pain to write substitute plans and the 1-3 days she wants to give me will not be enough to shoot 18 classrooms and support personnel as well as specials teachers, art, music, gym and lunch and learn program activities (and much more).

I know that she is thinking of saving money in exploiting yet another elementary school teacher of which we always say, "yes we can do that, you know it's for the children (bleh)" . A pro would cost quite a bit more, these principals are getting so clever at saving money.

I'm thinking this would be a fun few days though, but I will irritate my co-workers by getting close to their overtired faces with my wide angle lens I like so much. This yearbook will go out to many families and persons involved in the new "Promise" (free college tuition) program. The picture credit will have my name.

Can I do this? Sure. Do I want to do this? Sure, but I need advice on how to do this.

I more than absolutely love to take pictures of the children and staff. I am the school's lonely webmaster who puts up pictures of classrooms and events for the school. I was the one who got all the parents to sign photo releases for this purpose and have so staunchly vocalized the importance of promoting the web presence for our school.

Can I make this be as great as I want it to be? My first semi-pro shoot. Har har.
